HG XC Flights and Site Records at Elk

(Originally written by Jon L. James, 1995.)

XC flights to the lake (about 12 miles) are possible. You can fly down either side of the lake, but the most reliable route is Pitney, Young's Peak, get up over Clover Valley, then cross Bartlett Mountain (try to be 1,000' over Pinnacle Rock) going SE into Long Valley. From here you can glide to the Spring Creek store (big LZ, 23 miles) or continue south along Highway 20. Chalk Mountain is a good thermal source in Spring Valley. You run out of LZs and have to land at about 30 miles, unless you get high enough here to get to the Oasis or beyond. Don't fly into the Cache Creek Wilderness Area - there are meadows but no roads. The route down the West side of the lake has more LZs. Mid Mountain (west of campground, Hunters Point, or Sleeper Peak), cross Bachelor Valley, get up over White Rocks. It takes a good day to cross Lakeport and get to Mt Konocti, if you get there, you'll probably get up there. Chances of making Middletown are good if you've gotten this far. It's common to land into a south wind around Middletown (40 miles) and Pope Valley.
