This tip is from Barry Roberts, commercial director of Wilderness Medical Travel (courtesy of Cross Country magazine).
Jungle expedition people always carry a 'belt kit' gear pouch with life-saving equipment if they get lost in the jungle. Make sure your belt kit is accessible (for example, if you are hanging in a tree).
A pilot’s belt kit should include:
Cigarette lighter
Whistle – three blasts to indicate distress (six in the UK and Europe)
Small mirror – for signalling
Spool of dental floss – for lowering to the ground to pull a rope up if you crash into a tree
Mini head torch
Mini multi-tool
Compass
Spare batteries
High energy (adventure racing type) food
Cling film sandwich wrap (half a roll length)
Roller bandage
Mini pharmacy
Supply of essential regular personal medications
ID/passport/cash/credit card/insurance documentation
Hidden cash stash – money talks if you need help. US dollars are universally recognised
Pencil/paper
You may be surprised at the paucity of first aid supplies on this list but it is impractical to carry more.
